6 Summer Home Decor Trends for a Personalized Space

SUMMER is right around the corner! It’s the season of fun and relaxation. An opportunity for gatherings and being outdoors. With Spring’s renewal period behind us, Summer invites us to be the best version of ourselves, especially at our homes.

Within this blog post are home decor trends that are sure to be seen everywhere this Summer. The amazing thing about these trends is that there’s a huge focus on personalization - so while you’ll be on trend, you’ll also keep it classic simply by being yourself! How incredible, right?!

I’m excited, are you excited?! Let’s dive in.

  1. Unapologetic Joy

The first Summer home decor trend is Unapologetic Joy. This means: dopamine - everywhere. You’ve all heard about dopamine decor by now, right? Honestly, it seems to be here to stay, and I’m ALL about it. According to trend forecasting company, Fashion Snoops, the time has come to use happy, humorous, joyful design within our homes, and continue to use it. We are craving positivity in forms of feelings of carefree living to escape stressors in life. Our homes should be our own little sanctuary that makes us feel happy.

We at Spoonful of Cherries want you to feel fearless in choosing your color palettes, and embrace your personality through saturated spaces. Or really, whatever brings you joy.

"Putting objects you love in a room is the key to you enjoying your space. What's the point if the things in the room are not going to give you joy? Tip: If you are a person who gets your joy from a lot of different objects, think about getting a cabinet with glass doors — that way you can see all the objects but display them within a controlled space, so it doesn't feel cluttered." — Julianne Daly

2. Mixing Patterns

The continued trend of mixing patterns is in part due to the rise in the wallpaper movement, that is NOT slowing down. Heather Goerzen, director of design at Havenly, says that mixing patterns will hit its peak this Summer and continue into the rest of 2024.

Patterns that are of particular rise in popularity are:

  • Bold animal prints

  • Block prints

  • Vintage-inspired florals

  • Botanical prints

Beginning to incorporate bold patterns can be intimidating, so if you want to ease in, start with accent pillows, throws, dish towels, and paintings. Don’t be afraid to experiment in smaller portions, then work your way up once you find what you like!

3. Fluting Everything

Fluting is a set of grooves that creates a textured surface decoration, which makes for a perfect dimensional statement. It’s seen a lot within classical architecture, like Greek temples made of limestone, and it’s being incorporated into homes in a more modern way. We love a modern take on old world design over here!

"Fluted everything is everywhere. Almost every project I'm working on has fluted millwork, furniture, or both. It adds a great level of dimension, but be careful not to overdo it!" — Tommy Landen Huerter

4. Kitchen Practicality

The kitchen is the perfect space for innovation, wellness, and entertaining in the home. For me, it’s where I express a lot of my creativity by experimenting and sharing what I make with others! Bonus points if it’s healthy.

More and more home cooks are experimenting with different dishes and using fresh foods, particularly plant-based, to be more budget-conscious. And with it, they are finding the need for practical solutions to help reduce the amount of time making meals can take. Fashion Snoops expresses that steam ovens are of interest due to their easy technology and healthier alternative to microwaves.

Another approach brands are taking is by designing aesthetically pleasing appliances to feel as though the appliances are decor. This is a great way to add color into necessary items within our homes, possibly allowing decorating to feel a bit more manageable.

Ultimately, the point is to cater your kitchen to what is functional for you!

5. Homemade Focus

Have you heard Grandmillenial? Any guesses on what it means? The trend roots in nostalgia and tradition, while taking a new world approach. The term was coined by writer Emma Bazilian in House Beautiful in 2019, and while it’s been around for the last few years, this is the perfect explanation to this homemade focus.

This trend celebrates quality handmade pieces, and encourages us to curate our spaces with the old world in mind, whether that’s us making our own quality crafts or prioritizing thrifting. Here are some statement words that help sum up Grandmillenial:

  • Heirloom quality

  • Craft

  • Low-tech

  • Spiritual

  • Authentic

  • Wallpaper

  • Book shelves

  • Fine china

  • Hearty wood furniture

6. Personalized Pieces

Gone are the times for mass-produced art. Meaningful and personalized art and decor are taking precedence, and it’s giving significance. With more and more access to printable art from smaller creatives and brands, as well as customized wallpaper from printing companies, the options are seemingly endless to create spaces fully catered to you.

Etsy remains as a leading ecommerce website for original, handmade, custom and commissioned art and decor for this reason, and we don’t think it’s going to stop any time soon.

So there you have it - 6 decor trends for Summer. From joyful and colorful design, to structure and functionality, to craft and personality, there’s a lot of exciting details to take in!

It can be said that there is one overarching trend among these, and you guessed it… It’s to be authentically you! We love it when trends prioritize individuals and their own unique styles. While these trends are an excellent base for prioritizing in sections, the biggest point is to do what makes you happy. Which of these do you think you’ll get started with first?!
